2007, Paintings, Motherhood

Archives

These paintings explore the deep anxieties and tumultuous emotions that accompany parenting for me. As a mother of three, I feel a deep, timeless connection to Motherhood as a state of being, or as a collective principle. Animal or human, I have this sense that we all have the same goal and the same methods and that there is no such thing, really, as evolution. I could easily be any mother trying to fend off every danger and encourage my children to pick up the tools of survival. Though the cultural details of our societies may differ, the bones are the same. We all love our children. We all want our children to grow and bloom. I am part of a continuum as elastic as sinew and as sturdy as bone.
